MRS. J. W. SUMPTER DIED HERE SATURDAY

Death Occurs at Memorial Hospital on Her 72nd Birthday

Mrs. J. W. Sumpter, a resident of Madison county the past 35 years, died Saturday, Jan. 23 at Memorial hospital in Winterset.

Mrs. Sumpter was the former Philena McGee. She was born at Ottumwa on Feb. 23, 1881, and was aged 71 years, 11 months on the day of her death.

On Dec. 23, 1898, she was married to J. W. Sumpter, near Earlham. They were parents of five children, one son preceding the mother in death.

She was affiliated with the Presbyterian church at Pitzer.

Surviving are her husband; four children, Mrs. Lucille Bartmess, Mrs. Leona Schutt, Mrs. Pauline Clark and Mrs. Imogene Bane; seven grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Williams and Mrs. Maude Shaffer of Salem, Ore.; and a brother, Charlie McGee of Booneville.

Funeral services were held Tuesday from Richards Funeral home, conducted by the Rev. Glenn Parrott, pastor of the Winterset Methodist church. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
