John W. Sumpter, a resident of Madison county since early life died Sunday, Oct. 31, at a Winterset nursing home. He was 78 years of age.
Mr.Sumpter was born in Dallas county June 29, 1876, a son of George and Sarah Jane Fry Sumpter. He came to Madison county in childhood. During his active years he engaged in farming but had been retired for some time.
He was married at Earlham on Dec. 23, 1898 to Philena McGee, whose death occurred last January.
Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Lucille Bartmess, Mrs. Leona Schutt, and Mrs. Imogene Bane, all of Winterset and Mrs. Pauline Clark of Van Meter; a brother, Ed Sumpter of Redfield; and a sister, Mrs. Grace Kipping of Redfield.
Funeral services were to be held this Wednesday afternoon, from the Richards Funeral home conducted by the Rev. W.W. Steinmetz, pastor of the Winterset Methodist church. Burial will be made in the Winterset cemetery.
