Resident of Churchville Community for Most of Her Life
Mrs. Katie L. Shafer, a long-time resident of the Churchville community, died at a Winterset nursing home Saturday, July 3. She was 76 years of age, and had been in failing health for some time.
Mrs. Shafer was the former Katie L. Powers, daughter of Thomas and Bridget Cash Powers. She was born April 12, 1878. She was married at Churchville on Feb. 8, 1898 to John Shafer who preceded her in death.
Mrs.Shafer was the mother of six children. One daughter, Mary died in infancy. Surviving are a son, John Shafer of Newton; four daughters, Mrs. Gladys Wiedman of St. Charles, Mrs. Mabel Ziegler of Winterset, Mrs. Katherine Parkins of Winterset and Mrs. Pauline Jones of Albert Lea, Minn., and a sister, Margaret Powers of Winterset.
Rosary services were held from the Ramsey-Richards funeral home in Winterset Sunday evening and the funeral was held Monday from the Catholic church at Churchville, conducted by the pastor the Rev. Father Curtain. Burial was made at Churchville.
