Truly "when in the midst of life we are in death." Those words were never more forcibly impressed upon the citizens of Laurel than on Friday, January 10th, when the community was stunned by the news of the death of Bert D. Shaffer. Mr. Shaffer had been ill only a few days and the seriousness of the attack was not generally known until the end had come. Infection from a nail wound in the hand, apparently trivial at first, developed into blood poison and necessitated his removal to a hospital, where he passed away at 5 p.m., Friday.
The community feels the loss keenly, but the consolation remains that the personality of Mr. Shaffer was one of enduring inspiration, and the memory of his cheerful countenance and sunny disposition will linger on. Kind and sympathetic, public spirited and loyal, his friends were legion.
Mr. Shaffer was born in Madison county, near Winterset, Iowa, October 29, 1875. On March 13, 1901, he was married to Miss Emily White of Winterset. In 1911, the family moved to Joliet and in 1914 to Edgar. They came to Laurel in 1918. Five children were born to them, three of whom died in early childhood. Besides his wife and two daughters, Mrs. Russell Barr of Lovell, Wyoming and Meredith, aged 12, Mr. Shaffer is survived by two grandchildren, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Shaffer, and a brother Clyde Shaffer, who reside in Winterset.
Funeral services were conducted on Sunday by Rev. T. T. Fike and were attended by one of the largest crowds in the history of Laurel. Tributes of beautiful floral pieces covered the casket. A quartet, composed of Mr. and Mrs. Hilgert, Miss Clara Brohaugh and T. A Rignery, sang "Jesus, Lover of My Soul," "All Is Well With My Soul," and "Abide With Me."
Interment was made at Rockvale cemetery.
The Pallbearers were: H. T White, H. P. Leppink, John Stevens, A. Ringhausen, Fred Baumgardner, and A. L. Ketchum.
