ROYAL H. MORELAND

Royal H. Moreland, son of S. C. and Elizabeth Moreland, was born December 22, 1896 on a farm near Creston, Union county, Iowa, and departed this life on June 17, 1954 at his home in Earlham, Iowa, age 57 years, five months and 23 days.

In 1902 Roy came with his parents to Earlham and community which has since been his home.

Early in life he united with the Christian church. He attended the local grade and high school and was graduated with the class of 1914. After graduating from high school he went into the lumber business with his father for a time.

On February 6th, 1918, he was married to Hortense Clements and to them one daughter, Helen Lucille was born. The family lived for several years on a farm in the Worthington neighborhood and in 1929 moved to Earlham where Roy became associated with the Diamond Petroleum Co., and the D-X tank wagon station.

Mrs. Hortense Moreland passed away on January 1st, 1949. Because of failing health Mr. Moreland retired from the oil business several years ago. He served as acting postmaster from August 1952 to May 1953.

On March 23rd, 1950, he was united in marriage with Ann Corman who survives him together with his daughter, Mrs. Paul Shifflett and three grandchildren of Washington, D. C.; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. C. Moreland; a brother, John Moreland of Earlham and a sister, Mrs. Harold McFarlan of Dexter.

This community does not need to be told much of the life story of Roy Moreland, that story is already well known, but we like to recall some of the fine qualities of this man, who, for so many years served this locality so well.

Roy acquired his education in the Earlham schools where he was a bright and responsive student. He proved his ability in many ways. He was alert in business which he conducted with unusual skill and promptness. No road was too long, nor hours too late in serving his patrons as their tank wagon man. His integrity was unquestioned. When acting as Postmaster the people received that same courteous treatment. Giving of his best pleasantly, and asking no favors in return. His quiet kindly nature was most evident in his home and family life. His desire to live peaceably with all people around him. No doubt he found within himself the reward which comes from work well done.
