Hallana Margaret the youngest daughter of J. W. and Eliza Jane Rhode was born near Hillsboro, Iowa, May 1, 1883 and departed this life March 7, 1941 at her home in Des Moines.

She moved with her parents to Earlham in 1900 and graduated from the Earlham Academy in 1902, and completed a teachers course in Highland Park College.

She taught in Des Moines for several years, doing Chautauqua work in the summer. In 1926 she left teaching work to take a position in the Historical Building where she was head of the Indian department. In collaboration with Bessie Coons, a teacher in Des Moines, she wrote two books pertaining to Indian customs.

At the time of her death she was a teacher at Johnston where she had been teaching for the past three years. She enjoyed teaching and was extremely fond of her pupils, and was interested in them and their projects clear to the last.

She was a member of Golden Star Rebekah Lodge, Iowa Authors Club, Manna Club, W.C.T.U. and a charter member of the Church of Christ at Earlham. At the time of her death she was a member of the Business Womens Sunday School class and the University Church of Christ in Des Moines.

She was a devoted Christian and had abundant faith that everything worked for the best.

She leaves to mourn her untimely passing her sister Vada C. Rhode of Des Moines, her sister and brother-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Bricker also of Des Moines, nieces and npehews, Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Lewis, Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Byrne, Mr. and Mrs. Dayle Bricker and Mr. and Mrs. Edward Breheny and two grand nephews Dennis and Terence Byrne.

"With a cheery smile and a wave of her hand she has vanished into a better land."

Funeral was held Sunday, March 9 at 2 p.m. at Earlham Church of Christ. Rev. Sansbury of University Church of Christ officiating. Interment in Earlham cemetery. Rebekah service was in charge of Golden Star Lodge from Des Moines.
