CURTIS B. SECREST DIES

Earlham --(Special)-- July 14.--

Funeral services were held for Curtis B. Secrest Monday afternoon at the Presbyterian church with Rev. Overholser preaching the sermon. Mr. Secrest had been in failing health for the past two years following a stroke. He died at his home July 4th at the age of 64 years, five months, and eight days.

He is survived by his wife and eight children, eleven grandchildren, and two brothers. The children are Everett of Dexter, Eva of Joliet, Ill., Minnie and Leslie of Des Moines, Leona and Russell of Detroit, Mich., and Geraldine and Mary Chatherine at home. For fifteen years he was employed by the Hawkeye Cement company.

Curtis B. Secrest Died July 4th

Curtis B. Secrest, the youngest son of Mary Jane and George Secrest departed this life Friday, July 4th, 1941 at the age of 64 years, five months and eight days. He was born January 25th, 1877 in Mt. Erie (Wayne county), Illinois.

In the year of 1898 on the 9th of October he was united in marriage to Grace Mitchell Vanfassan of Mt. Erie, Illinois. To this union were born nine children: Everett of Dexter, Iowa, Eva of Joliet, Illinois; Minnie of Des Moines; Leona and Russell of Detroit, Michigan; Leslie of Des Moines; and a daughter (Lula) who preceded him in death.

Up until the year of 1920 Mr. Secrest made a home for his family on a farm near Jeff, Illinois. In this year the family moved to Iowa and it was in and near Earlham he spent the remaining years of his life. After moving to Earlham two more children were born, Geraldine and Mary Catharine who are still both at home.

After spending the first two years in Iowa on a farm, he moved to Earlham, where he was employed by the Hawkeye Cement Co. For 15 years he worked as night watchman for the company. Two years before his death he suffered a stroke and has been unable to work since.

He was a devoted husband and father spending all of his leisure time with his loved ones. Besides the immediate family, he leaves eleven grandchildren, two brothers, Ren of Jeff, Illinois, and Edd of Seattle, Washington, many other relatives and a host of friends.

When a young man of 21 years he and his wife united with the Presbyterian church in Illinois. He was a friend and neighbor to all. He bore his afflictions without murmur or complaint, and tried to make life worth living for all about him.

Funeral services were held Monday at 2 o’clock in the Presbyterian church by Rev. Overholser, the pastor. Burial was in the Earlham cemetery.
