ROBERT HAYS KILLED IN CAR CRASH MARCH 3RD

Former Earlham Resident Accident Victim in Missouri

Earlham-(Special)-March 9, The community was shocked on Wednesday morning to receive the news of the death of Robert Hays. Mr. Hays was killed in an auto crash while returning to his home at Memphis, Missouri from a business trip to Des Moines. Mr. Hays and his brother Eben had purchased a moving picture theatre at Memphis and had only moved the past week.

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the Worthington church with Walter Feay of Memphis, Missouri, but formerly of Earlham, preaching the service. The Earlham Masonic lodge of which Mr. Hays was a member assisted in the service. The following obituary was read: Robert Ryle Hays was born August 11, 1901 in Madison county near Earlham. He passed away from this life, March 3, 1936 after an auto accident on highway No. 63 near Freemont at the age of 34 years and 6 months. Mr. Hays lived on the farm with his parents all of his life except the last week. He had just moved to Memphis, Missouri, where he and his brother had entered into a business partnership. It was on a business trip to Des Moines that Robert met with the fatal accident.

Robert leaves to mourn his loss, his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Hays (Charles W. & Mattie (Brown) Hays), of near Earlham, two brothers, Eben of Memphis, Missouri and Charlie Hays now attending school at Iowa City and one sister, Mrs. Florence Garrett of near Earlham.

Burial was made in the Worthington cemetery with Frank Hill, Phillip Duff, Fred Moore, Geo. Reinert, Earl Schalkle and Fred Clifton acting as pallbearers.

ROBERT HAYS KILLED IN AUTO ACCIDENT

Car Hit By Truck Near Fremont Tuesday Night. Funeral at Worthington This Afternoon.

Robert Hays, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Hays of the Worthington neighborhood was instantly killed Tuesday night at about 10 o’clock when his car was struck by a truck. The accident occurred on highway No. 63 near Fremont, Iowa.

Robert was returned from Des Moines to Memphis, Missouri, where he and his brother Eben took charge of ----- theater March 1. According to reports, he had been accompanied to Des Moines on business by the former owner of the theater. Each was driving his own car. On the return trip Hays was following the other car when a north bound truck sideswiped it, knocking off the fenders on the left side and continuing, seemingly out of control, directly into the path of the Hays car.

Funeral services were held at the Worthington church in charge of the Earlham Masonic lodge and Rev. W. M. Feay of Memphis, Missouri. Pall bearers were Frank Hill, Earl Schalkle, Phillip Duff, Ford Clifton, George Reinert, and Fred Moore. Singers were Mervyn McLennan, Will Price, Ralph Erb and S. C. Welch.
