CATHERINE A. HENNING

Catherine A. Henning, daughter of Jacob and Mary E. Henning was born near what is now Garden Grove, Iowa on the 22nd day of September 1855 and died in Winterset, Iowa on the 4th day of May 1936. She was united in marriage to Levi B. Davis on the 11th day of January 1878. To this union were born six children, George, Hittie, Mary, Ben B., Henry L., and Katheryn. Her husband Levi B. and three children, George, Hittie and Mary preceded her in death.

She was united in marriage to David M. Green of Adair county on the 18th day of October 1892. To this union was born one child, Allie who died in infancy. She leaves to mourn her loss her husband, David M. Green, two sons, Ben B. and Henry L. Davis, one daughter, Mrs. Ernest Preston, eight grandsons, two granddaughters, six great granddaughters, two nephews, one niece and many friends.

At the tender age of six, little Kate was left an orphan, her father having given his life in defense of the Union and her mother dying from the shock. A brown haired little girl, without the aid of a mother's love or a father's kindly care, she experienced the rigor of pioneer days, sometimes watching the Indians trailing single file across the prairies, sometimes listening to the midnight howling of the wolves. She saw the tangled wilderness turned into fertile fields and cities and towns spring up and grow where once the wild beasts roamed. Yet in it all and through it all, she saw the handiwork of God and felt the nearness of His Presence. Through all the days of her life she held fast to her faith in God, and deeply impressed upon her children the sublime truth that "God is love". In that faith she lived and in that faith she died.

Pallbearers were her grandchildren: Lee Evans, Sam Davis, Harvey Davis, Levi Preston, Melvin Davis and Benny Davis. Donald Davis was honorary pallbearer.
