Miss Ida Mae Slocum, who had been residing at the C. E. Hamilton home, died Sunday night, November at the Winterset hospital, following a two weeks illness resulting from a fractured hip. The body was taken to Tiffin Wednesday morning and the Rev. Paul Hann of Wellman, former Winterset resident conducted her funeral services at the Tiffin Methodist church at eleven o'clock. Burial was in the Tiffin cemetery beside her sister.

The account of Miss Slocum's life is as follows:

Ida May Slocum, daughter of Constant Collins Slocum and Martha McConnell Slocum was born at Marengo, Iowa on July 27, 1856. She completed the public schools and high school at Marengo and later attended the Iowa State Teachers college at Cedar Falls, where she prepared for kindergarten teaching. She spent some fifteen years teaching at Marengo and Oxford, Iowa, Minneapolis, Minnesota and Lamont, Oklahoma.

Born of pioneer parents, Miss Slocum also chose the life of a pioneer. In September 1893 with her cousins, Henry B. and Harriet Dennis Heberling, she made the run into Oklahoma at the time of the opening of the "Cherokee Strip". There she homesteaded one hundred sixty acres of land which she held until the time of her death. In 1911 she returned with the Heberling family to Iowa City and Tiffin where she made her home until 1927. In the fall of that year she went with Mr. and Mrs. Heberling to Long Beach, California where she lived with them until Mr. Heberling's death in January 1932, after which time she made her home for more than a year with Helen Heberling Smith. Since then she has lived with Margery Heberling Harding of Lexington, Kentucky and Prudence Hamilton of Winterset.

On October 18th she fractured her hip in Winterset resulting in her death on November 1, 1936. Four years ago she suffered a similar accident from which she had completely recovered.

Her mother and father died during her early childhood and her only sisters, Alice and Nellie preceded her in death. Her nearest living relative is her cousin, Mrs. Harriet Dennis Heberling formerly of Tiffin.

Miss Slocum when a young girl united with the Methodist church and for many years she was a member of the Eastern Star and Rebekah lodges.

Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton and children Joe and Prudence and Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Hamilton attended the funeral services in Tiffin and returned to Winterset last night. They were accompanied home by Dr. and Mrs. Don L. Harding of Lexington, Kentucky who will be their guests until the latter part of the week.
