Sherman Gregory was born Nov. 25, 1864 in Ringgold county, Iowa. He was the oldest son of eight children, born to John W. and Jane Gregory. In about 1866, Sherman moved with his parents to Madison county, Iowa, where he was raised on a farm and attended Ft. Grout country school.

After his marriage he and his wife moved to Winterset where he carried rural mail for a number of years. It was at this place that their only son, Curtis W. Gregory was born. Later, Sherman and his family moved to Des Moines where he became a carpenter.
In 1918 his foster daughter, Velma, blessed their home.
In 1932 Sherman, his wife and Velma moved to Adel where they lived with his son Curtis.
