Mary E. Cunningham Dies

Miss Mary E. Cunningham, well known resident of Madison and Warren counties, died at the Mercy hospital in Des Moines Sunday May 20th, shortly after twelve o’clock, at the age of 72 years. She became ill with arthritis and complications two and a half years ago. After receiving treatment at the Mercy hospital, for several months, she was taken home. Complications arose, and she grew worse so she was taken to the hospital again in March, and was cared for there, until her death.

Miss Cunningham, familiarly known as “Mamie” was born in Crawford township, February 16, 1862, the daughter of John and Julia Cahill Cunningham. Her mother died in 1864, and her father later married Miss Kate Brazzle. Miss Mamie attended the Crawford township schools, and later St. Ambrose school in Des Moines. Her father died in 1904, while Mrs. Cunningham died in 1901.

In Miss Cunningham’s death, there passed on a woman who was universally loved and respected. The greater part of her life was spent in Crawford township. In 1915 she moved to and improved a farm just across the line in Warren county. She was loyal and devoted to her church. She was kind and unselfish to her neighbors and friends. To her numerous nephews and nieces her tender solicitude was a constant benediction. “Aunt Mamie’s life here is ended, but her kindly influence will long remain with us.”

The Rev. M. F. Dugan conducted her services at St. Patrick’s church at nine o’clock, Tuesday morning, May 22nd, and burial was in the church cemetery. Five nephews and a great nephew served as pallbearers: John, Tom and Lou Kelleher, James Mulvihill, John Cunningham and Joe Roach. The church and church yard was filled with people, who came from all parts of Madison and Warren counties, and Des Moines to pay their final respect.

Miss Cunningham is survived by one brother and two sisters: P. J. Cunningham and Mrs. T. Walter Beam of Winterset, and Mrs. Julia Mulvihill of Lee township. A sister and brother preceded her in death: Mrs. T. F. Kelleher died September 29, 1913 and Joe Cunningham November 15, 1933.
