L. C. GATES DIES

St. Charles (Special) October 17.

L. C. Gates passed away at Independence, where he had been receiving medical aid for a number of weeks, on Oct. 13, at the age of 55 years.

With the exception of a few years he had lived his entire life in St. Charles. For many years he had worked in the H. J. DeWitt store and later in Strain's store in St. Charles where he made many friends throughout the community and was held in high esteem by all with whom he came in contact.

About eighteen months ago he moved his family to Marshalltown where they still reside. He is survived by his wife and seven children, as follows: Roland, William Dale, John and Helen all of Marshalltown, Mrs. Catherine Winger of Yorktown and Robert of St. Charles. Also five grandchildren, his aged mother, Mrs. Hannah Phillips of Prairie City, and two sisters, Mrs. Mattie DeWitt of Prairie City, and Mrs. Grace Hartman of Reading, Minn., all of whom were here Sunday for the funeral and burial services.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in the Methodist church in St. Charles, conducted by Rev. L. Smith. Burial was made in the St. Charles cemetery where the Masonic rites were given at the grave.

SERVICES ARE HELD FOR LEWIS C. GATES

Funeral services for Lewis C. Gates of Marshalltown were held at the Methodist church in St. Charles Sunday afternoon. The Masonic services were given at the grave by Glen Foster.

Mr. Gates was born east of St. Charles in Warren county, June 26, 1883 and with the exception of a few years in South Dakota had made his home in St. Charles, moving to Marshalltown a year ago. He wa a member of Model Lodge A. F. A. M. of St. Charles and of the Methodist church.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Louva Gates, seven children, Rolland, William, Dale, John and Helen Gates of Marshalltown, Robert of St. Charles and Mrs. Kathryn Minger (sic) of Yorktown; his mother, Mrs. Hannah Phillips of Prairie City, two sisters, Mrs. Martha DeWitt of Prairie City and Mrs. Grace Hartman of Reading, Minnesota; five grandchildren and a host of other relatives.
