CLARENCE COMPTON OF WINTERSET SUCCUMBS

World War Veteran Died Tuesday at Hospital in Des Moines

Clarence Compton, Winterset World war veteran, died at the Veterans' hospital in Des Moines, Tuesday evening, March 29th, shortly after six o'clock. Mr. Compton who was 53 years of age, had been in poor health for a number of years, and had been receiving treatment at the Des Moines hospital, ten days before his death.

His funeral services will be held at Tidrick's funeral home Thursday afternoon, March 31, at 2 o'clock.

Mr. Compton was born at Glenwood, but came to this county when a child and has since made his home here. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. J. L. Crawford and a sister, Mrs. Floyd Gray.

Clarence R. Compton, son of Granville and Susan Compton, was born at Glenwood, Iowa, May 20, 1893 and passed away at the Veterans' hospital in Des Moines, March 29, 1938, aged 44 years, 10 months and 9 days.

When about 10 years of age his mother moved to Winterset, which has been his home since.

July 23, 1918, he was inducted into the 120th Infantry, and served over seas, receiving an honorable discharge, April 22, 1919.

His death resulted from a complication of diabetes and other ailments.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his mother, Mrs. John L. Crawford, the stepfather, one sister, Mrs. Floyd Gray of near Winterset, one niece, Mrs. Ted Bass of Winterset, and a step sister, Mrs. Jack Martin of Waynoka, Oklahoma. Besides those names, he leaves also a host of friends who share with the family their sorrows of separation. His father and two brothers, Rollie and Fred have preceded him in death.

The deceased was a member of the American Legion, Green Rogers Post, No. 184, Winterset, Iowa.

Funeral services were held at the Tidrick Funeral home, conducted by Rev. Burton L. Nay of Cedar Falls. Burial was made in the Baptist cemetery northeast of Winterset.
