Death of John L. Baker

The body of John L. Baker of Marysville, Missouri who died on January 30th was brought to Winterset for burial last Saturday.

After brief services conducted by Rev. R. C. Cully, burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.

Mr. Baker was well known in Winterset where he resided before going to Marysville. At one time, he was associated with the late J. J. Gaston in the implement business. After moving to the western coast, he returned to Winterset about 35 years ago and for a time ran an implement store on East Court avenue.

DR. JOHN BAKER DIES AT 77

Dr. John LeGrand Baker, age 77, for 22 years an eye specialist in this city, died at 5:30 o'clock yesterday evening at the St. Francis hospital. He was taken to the hospital last Friday. Mrs. Mildred Cord of Chicago, a da ughter, who arrived here only two hours before her father's death, said that Dr. Baker had been ailing since the first of the year when he slipped and fell on some ice on one of the streets. The time for the funeral has not been set, but it probably will be held Saturday at Winterset, la., and burial will be there. John L. Baker, Jr., a son, of Maywood, Ill., is ill at his home and for that reason the funeral plans wait.

Mr. Baker was born in Wisconsin November 3, 1858. More than 50 years ago he was married to Mary Jane Oldham. She died in 1906. Mr. Baker traveled for a number of years for an implement firm out of Council Bluffs, Ia. At the age of 55, Mr. Baker schooled himself for the profession of an eye doctor and shortly afterward began his practice in Maryville, where he has since had his office.

He was a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge and the Elk’s club. Mr. Baker had also been a member of the old Moose order. Several years ago Mr. Baker was a candidate for representative from Nodaway county, losing out in the primary.

Surviving are the daughter and son – Maryville Daily Forum of last Wednesday.

FORMER RESIDENT DIES IN MARYVILLE

Dr. John L. Baker, 77, former Winterset resident, died at St. Francis hospital in Maryville, Missouri, January 28. Services were held in Winterset Saturday at the Ramsey – Richards home, conducted by Dr. R. C. Cully, pastor of the First Presbyterian church. Burial was in the Winterset cemetery.

Dr. Baker was in the implement business in Winterset a number of years, associated with J. J. Gaston. When 55 he studied to be in oculist, locating in Maryville where he lived the remainder of his life.

Dr. Baker was born in Wisconsin November 3, 1858. He came to Iowa with his parents, Oliver and Elmira Baker when a boy, the family living on a farm north of Winterset. He was married to Mary Jane Oldham June 4, 1885. Mrs. Baker died May 4, 1906.

He was a member of the I.O.O.F. and of the Elks lodge. Surviving are two of his four children, Mrs. Mildred A. Cord, of Chicago, Illinois, and John L. Baker, Jr., of Maywood, Illinois.
