LLOYD CONRAD; EVA SCHWARTZ VICTIMS

Car Carrying Aged Couple Overturns in Ditch Sunday

Death in the flaming wreckage of an automobile was the lot of two more persons in Madison county Sunday when Mrs. Eva Schwartz aged 67, and Lloyd Conrad, aged 73, both of Earlham, were fatally burned.

Mrs. Schwartz was trapped under the automobile when it overturned in a ditch, and was burned to death there. Conrad managed to get out of the car and had crawled up the ditch for some distance when found. His clothes had burned from his body. He was rushed to the hospital in Winterset where he died several hours later.

Conrad was a retired livestock buyer in Earlham, and Mrs. Schwartz was his housekeeper.

The accident occurred on the rock road to Earlham, about one mile west of the Storck corner on No. 169. The aged couple were returning to Earlham from a Sunday drive. Before he died, Conrad said that he had become sick suddenly while driving along the road and had run off into the ditch. At that point the ditch is a sheer drop of about seven feet from the edge of the road, and its edge is concealed by high, thick weeds. The car turned over in the ditch, and landed upside down.

The automobile was an old, model T Ford coupe, with the gas tank under the seat. With the car upside down, the gasoline poured out, soaking the clothing of the two victims. A spark from somewhere started a flame and the old automobile was turned into a funeral pyre.

Lloyd Ross, a farmer living near the scene, was the first to discover the tragedy.

Conrad is survived by three sons, John of Earlham, Alva of Quincy, Ill., and Earl of Port Huron, Mich. Mrs. Schwartz leaves one daughter, Mrs. Cora Alexander of Bloomington, Ill.

Earlham Library Obituary Collection
Earlham, Iowa
July 1938

Lloyd C. Conrad, the son of Newton and Mary Conrad, was born at Roanoke, West Virginia, on July 19, 1865. He was one of a family of 10 children, five of whom are still living.

As a young man of 19 Conrad traveled west from his boyhood home. Finding employment in Earlham he remained here almost continuously throughout the rest of his lifetime. He spent a few years in the produce business at Stuart, returning to engage in the same occupation here. For 26 years prior to his retirement in 1931 he was employed as manager of the Swift & Company station in Earlham. His ability was highly regarded by his employers and even after his retirement he was active in the opening of stations at Mingo and Truro.

On December 31, 1890, he was united in marriage to Miss Rachel H. Garwood of Earlham, the ceremony taking place at Winterset. Their home was blessed by the birth of three sons, John, Alva and Earl, all of whom are still living. The wife and helpmate preceded Mr. Conrad in death on March 23, 1923.

During his long business career in Earlham Mr. Conrad established a wide friendship and deserved a reputation for fair dealing. His tragic death, within two days of his seventy-third birthday, came as a distinct shock to all who knew him, and his going leaves an empty place in the community that he called home.

The deceased is survived by his three sons, John N. of Earlham, Alva B. Conrad of Aurora, Illinois, and Earl C. Conrad of Port Huron, Michigan. One brother and four sisters also mourn his passing. They are Perry E. Conrad of Bakersfield, California, Mrs. Dora Cook of Weston, West Virginia, Mrs. Minnie Ross of Charleston, West Virginia, Mrs. Rose Sparks of Bethany, West Virginia, and Mrs. Martha Hill Young of Los Angeles, California. Six grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews also survive him.
