September 1938George Thompson Junkin, eldest son of James Law and Rebecca Jane Junkin, was born in Warren County, Monmouth, Illinois, April 30, 1856. When he was a young man the family moved to South Dakota where they lived about one year, coming from there to Madison County, Iowa in the fall of 1880.
He married Mary McQuie, of Madison county, December 22, 1885, continuing to reside in Madison county, until December 1, 1887 when they moved to a farm west of Dexter which has been their home all these years. December 22, 1935 Mr. and Mrs. Junkin were privileged to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary.
To this union nine children were born, four sons and five daughters. One son died in infancy. The children are, Effie at home; (Mamie), Mrs. Ben Tate, Jackson, Minnesota; (Dosha), Mrs. J. M. Bernau and Joy M., Earlham, Iowa; (Isabell), Mrs. Orville Bast, Dexter, Iowa; (Hazel), Mrs. Vernon McCleary and Walter L., Adel, Iowa; and Chester, Dexter, Iowa. There are also fifteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren. In addition to the above children and his faithful wife of so many years, he is survived by three brothers, Frank and Hol, Earlham, Iowa; Grant of Humboldt, Kansas and two sisters, Mrs. Mac Watson, Monmouth, Illinois, and Mrs. Sadie Brown, Clearmont, Florida.
George Junkin was a strong, active man, enjoying good health until about one year ago when he became afflicted with heart trouble. He passed away Tuesday morning, September 13, 1938 at 10 o'clock at his farm home west of Dexter at the age of 82 years, four months and 13 days. Mr. Junkin was a great lover of home and was never happier than when all his children and grandchildren came to spend the day with him. He was known among his fellow citizens for his strict honesty and integrity in all his dealings and in consequence was held in high esteem by all who knew him. He became a member of the school board in Penn township, Guthrie county soon after moving to that township fifty-one years ago, and was still a member at the time of his death. He was also president of the College Corner Telephone Co., for some thirty years and was a member of the board of directors of the Dexter Savings Bank and always took a keen interest in the affairs not only of his own family, but of the town and entire community.
In his passing the family is bereft of a kind and loving father, the communtiy has lost a most efficient and genial business man and neighbor; one who was interested in the progress and welfare of his town and community and ever willing to do his part and assume his full share of responsibility in its affairs.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 15th, from the M.E. church in Dexter, conducted by the Rev. Sippel of the Christian church in Adel. Burial was made in the family lot at Penn Center.
