ELDEST WINTERSET WOMAN DIES AT 92

Mrs. Sarah Duff Died Early Monday Morning at Home Here

Mrs. Sarah J. Duff, who was the oldest surviving woman resident of Winterset, died at her home here early Monday morning at the age of 92 years.

Mrs. Duff had lived the greater part of her long life in Madison county. For the past year and half she had been an invalid as the result of a fall.

She was born in Lawrence county, Indiana on January 22, 1844, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Hudson. About 1856 she came to Iowa with her parents. The family settled at DeSoto and later moved to a farm seven miles north of Winterset.

As a young woman she returned to Indiana to teach in the public schools of Bedford. There she was married in 1871 to George Duff. They returned to Madison county after the wedding.

They came to Winterset in 1899, and here Mr. Duff engaged in business for a number of years. He died in 1911. Both had united with the United Presbyterian church at North Branch; and transferred their membership to the Winterset church after moving to Iowa. Mrs. Duff was a prominent member of the congregation here over a long period of years.

Mr. and Mrs. Duff were the parents of three children. Two of them, Elbridge and Grace Duff died at an early age. One daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Phelps of Steele, North Dakota, survives her parents. Other survivors of the deceased are a grandson, Elbridge Phelps of Steele, North Dakota and a brother M. L. Hudson of Winterset.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday from the Tidrick funeral home. The Rev. W. G. Robertson, pastor of the United Brethren church will officiate. Burial will be made in the Winterset cemetery.

NONAGENARIAN DIES – SERVICES ARE FRIDAY

Last Rites Will Be Held For Mrs. Sarah J. Duff. Lived Here 80 Years

Last rites for Mrs. Sarah J. Duff who would have been 93 in January and who died December 14, will be held Friday afternoon at two o’clock at the home on south Fourth avenue. The Rev. W. G. Robertson, pastor of the United Presbyterian church will be in charge of the services, and burial will be in the Winterset cemetery.

Mrs. Duff through the long years, retained an unusually keen mind. Her eyesight failed a number of years ago and about a year ago she fell, breaking a hip. Until that time she had been in good health. Her last illness was brief, becoming serious only two days before her death.

She was born in Lawrence county, Indiana, January 22, 1844, coming to Madison county with her parents, William and Elizabeth Hudson in 1856, locating on the place known as the Ebon Hays farm northwest of Winterset.

The trip to Iowa was made in a prairie schooner. Crossing the Mississippi on a ferry, the boat sank. The horses swam to shore and after the women and children were placed on a second ferry which came to the rescue, some of the household goods were salvaged. Later will long overland trip to Iowa was resumed.

Mrs. Duff taught in the county and in 1871 was married to George Duff. They lived for a time near De Soto, afterward on a farm north of Winterset before moving to the city.

She was a faithful member of the United Presbyterian Church and as long as health would permit, was active in the work. Several years ago the Sally Duff Missionary society of the church honored Mrs. Duff by giving the organization her name.

She leaves her daughter, Mrs. Reese Phelps of Steele, North Dakota, her brother, Luther Hudson, who has made his home with his sister a number of years, and other relatives.
