WINTERSET BOY FATALLY INJURED WHEN RUN DOWN BY BICYCLE

Donald Wayne Waltz Died in Hospital at Iowa City Saturday; Logan Warns of Bicycle Riding Dangers

Donald Wayne Waltz, 12-year-old-son of Mr. and Mrs. Louie Waltz of Winterset was fatally injured Thursday evening about dusk when run down by a bicycle ridden by a son of Mr. and Mrs. Charley Parkins of Winterset.

The boy was rushed to the state hospital at Iowa City Friday in an attempt to save his life, but he died early Saturday morning of internal injuries.

The accident occurred as he was walking along a street near his home. He was carrying a lighted lantern, but in some way the rider of the bicycle failed to avert hitting him. Some part of the machine struck the boy in the abdomen, rupturing an intestine.

The tragedy has brought the bicycle danger before the Winterset public this week, and Mayor Martin S. Logan has issued a plea to parents of the community to help in averting more accidents of this type.

Winterset parents must bring bicycle riding among their children to a more safe and sane manner, if more tragedies of this nature are to averted, warned the mayor. In the streets, the riders of bicycles are in constant danger from automobiles. Riding on the sidewalk is contrary to city ordinance and is a danger to pedestrians. The parents of Winterset must realize, it was pointed out, that bicycle riding is far more dangerous today than it was in the "horse and buggy days" when they were young.

In spite of this one fatality, Winterset has been very fortunate, Logan said. In dozens of cases recently, young riders have narrowly escaped being crushed under the wheels of automobiles and it was only through good fortune that they ave escaped. But such luck may not last, if the present recklessness of young riders is not curbed, some Winterset parents may soon have the mangled form of their girl or boy brought home to them. Youngsters, out for a good time on a bicycle, simply will not be careful, Logan pointed out.

The victim of Thursday's accident Donald Wayne Waltz was born March 7, 1925. He was a student in the fifth grade at the North ward. In addition to his parents, he is survived by four brothers, Wallace, Eugene, Myles and Lloyd; and three sisters, Ruby, Marjorie Ann and Annabelle.

Funeral services were held Monday from Tidrick's funeral home in charge of the Rev. M. R. Talley.
