October 1938John David Haney, son of John H. and Sarah E. Haney was born March 23, 1871 at Lincoln, Logan county, Illinois and departed this life October 28, 1938 at the age of 67 years, seven months and five days.
At an early age he moved with his parents to York county, Nebraska, where he made his home until 1923 when he moved to Earlham, where he has since resided.
He was married to Eva Bechtel August 30, 1896 at Princeton, Missouri. Besides his wife he is survived by three brothers and three sisters: Elmer of Guernsey, Wyoming; Oren of York, Nebraksa; Roy of Omaha, Nebraska; Mrs. Hattie Cook and Mrs. Kemplin of York, and Mrs. Eva Thomspon of Minden.
His mother preceded him from this life just two weeks ago.
John Haney was a good man, honest, kind, open hearted; loved by all. He was a member of the Odd Fellow lodge which order was present in a body and presented their ritualistic work at the grave. Mr. Haney was also a member of the Methodist church and of its board of trustees. He was a member of the pastor's men's Bible class. He held his membership in high regard and was always in his place on Sunday.
He answered roll call of his class and attended church the Sunday before his death. Little dreamed we that before another week he would answer Roll Call with the Invisible and Immortal Church and be Promoted to the Lodge on high.
We shall greatly miss John Haney's cheerful smile and hand clasp. We can scarce realize that he is gone. He is, in the poet's phrase "not dead" but "just away" and we are confident that "in the Morning of God" we shall see him and greet him again as in the old days.
The above obituary was prepared and read by his pastor, Rev. C. S. Burnette. The music was furnished by a quartet composed of Mrs. Arthur Marks, Mrs. Chas. Soderberg, and Bert and Fred Fry. The Rev. Humphrey of Des Moines, an officer of the Odd Fellow lodge preached the sermon.
All of the brothers and sisters were in attendance at the funeral with the exception of Elmer Haney of Wyoming who was unable to come. Others from a distance who were present were: Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Haas of Omaha, Nebraska; Chester Folts and son and Miss Ella Folts of York, Nebraska; Orlo Masters of Bradshaw, Nebraska; Mr. and Mrs. Glen Stubbs and Mrs. Kirkpatrick of Mason City; Mr. and Mrs. John Lind and family of Stuart; Mr. and Mrs. Bert Fry of Adel; Elmer Bechtel of Olney, Illinois; Mrs. Pearl Hakes and other friends from Des Moines.

Thursday, November 3, 1938John Haney died suddenly Friday afternoon at about 2:30, a victim of cerebral hemorrhage. He had not complained of feeling ill and was working as usual at the quarry when the stroke came. Fellow workers put him in a car and rushed him to Earlham for an examination by Dr. Carver who found that he had died almost at once.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at two o’clock at the Methodist church in Earlham and interment was made in the Earlham cemetery.
