Herman H. Westphal passed away Thursday, March 17th, at the home of his son John near Earlham. Herman Henry Westphal, son of John and Mary Westphal Schlake, was born in Clayton county, Iowa, Aug. 21, 1872. During his early childhood he came with his parents to Madison county, residing on a farm most of his life.
On August 21, 1907 he was united in marriage with Miss Luella Atkins. This union was blessed with four sons, two of whom passed out of this life in early childhood. Mrs. Westphal also passed away Feb. 8, 1920. In 1930, because of a mental ailment, it was found necessary to remove Herman to the State hospital at Clarinda for treatment. About six months ago his health began to fail and his condition grew steadily worse. Finally he was brought home by ambulance on March 16, to the home of his son John. He died the following day at the age of 65 years. He leaves to mourn his departure, two sons John and Marion, two brothers, August and Ferdinand, living in California, one half brother, Fred Meyer and three grandchildren.
The funeral service was held on Sunday afternoon at Trinity Lutheran church conducted by the Rev. C. Lilie, and his remains were laid to rest in the Lutheran cemetery.
