PIONEER RESIDENT DIES

Mrs. William P. Houlette Died At Home Near St. Charles At Age of 78.

Mrs. Magdalene Hattel Houlette life long resident of Madison county, died at her home near St. Charles, Monday, July 23rd after an illness of several years. Mrs. Houlette who was 78 years of age was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Hattel, who came to Madison county to make their home in 1854. The deceased grew up in this land of pioneers, spending many years in the cabin on the old homestead built by her father. Much of her education was secured by trudging several miles through the forest to the log school house.

She was married to William Patterson Houlette, December 24, 1893, at Hanley. They were the parents of two sons George T. and William Houlette, who survive the parents. Mr. Houlette died November 13, 1932, and a niece Xenia Hattel Kenny, whom they raised, preceded them in death. She also leaves one sister, Mrs. Joe Ruth of Winterset. Her entire life, with the exception of two years in Nebraska was spend in Iowa.

The Rev. L. W. Nixon conducted the funeral services for Mrs. Houlette Wednesday, July 25th at 10:30 o’clock in the Methodist church at St. Charles, and burial was made in the St. Charles cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Ruth and sons Hattel and Clyde drove over from Winterset to attend the services.
