Mrs. C. Vaughan, young mother of five children, died Sunday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. at her home two miles west of Earlham from complications brought on as a result of scarlet fever. Added to the sad passing of the mother, conditions in the home are made more difficult by the five children ranging in age from 1 to 7 being seriously ill with the disease.

Nina, aged 5, is reported to have a fever of 105 ½ today and has the whooping cough as well as scarlet fever, Johnny, aged 4, has a temperature of 104 and his illness is complicated with pneumonia. The other children are beginning to cough and may take the whooping cough.

Dr. Carver and two nurses, Miss D. L. Barclay, trained nurse from Des Moines and Mrs. Nellie Williams, practical nurse from Dexter, are doing everything possible to bring the children back to health.

The response of the community to the need of this family has been especially helpful for supplies and assistance have been bestowed in a spirit of kindness which gives rise to the thought that ‘neighbors and friends’ are still big words in the fullest sense of their meaning.

Miss Barclay whose experience as a nurse has taken her into many such difficult situations has especially commented on the fine attitude of this community.

A private funeral for Mrs. Vaughan was held Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock with a short service at the grave being conducted by Rev. W. H. Reece. Interment was in the Earlham cemetery.
