Daniel Swearingen son of Thomas B. and Sarah Jane Arnold Swearingen, was born in Eddyville, Iowa, March 14, 1855 and passed away at the Harken hospital, Osceola, Iowa, February 2, 1938, age 82 years, 10 months, and 19 days. He was the eldest of ten children.
He came with his parents to Madison county when he was two years old and settled on a farm two and one-half miles north of Truro, having lived in this county for over 80 years with the exception of one and one-half years that he spent in Kansas.
He was united in marriage to Nancy Ann Fife, December 11, 1877, and to this union were born three daughters: Mrs. Ida Miller of Truro; Mrs. Grace Rankin of Bedford; and Mrs. Flossie Dodd of Truro, who passed away November 14, 1918. He and his wife moved from their farm north of Truro to town in 1904, his wife passing away January 20, 1920.
On December 4, 1921, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Janetta Smith of Creston, Iowa, who survives him. He accepted Christ as his Savior many years ago and united with the Christian church at Truro of which he remained a member until his death.
Dan, as he was always called, was loved by all and his genial smile and pleasant greeting will be greatly missed in the town and country where he has made his home for so many years. He always greeted everyone with a pleasant word, and was especially kind to children, being never too busy to pause and talk to a child. He was a loving husband and father and a kind neighbor, always willing to help anyone in trouble.
He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, two daughters, seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, one step-daughter, Mrs. Mabel Scott of Council Bluffs, and three sisters, Mrs. George Foster, of Truro, Mrs. Myrtle Sethney, of San Jose, California, and Mrs. Henry Lill of San Francisco, California.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon February 4th at the M. E. church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Kelly.
