J. F. TATE, FORMER MERCHANT, IS DEAD

Funeral Services Were Held Wednesday for 88-Year-Old Citizen

John F. Tate, one of Winterset's oldest residents and formerly a well-known business man in this community, died at his home Monday. He was 88 years of age.

Mr. Tate came from sturdy pioneer stock, his parents coming from England in 1842, and settling in Layden, Mass. There he was born, on October 11, 1849. The family soon moved west to Peru, Ill., where the father died in 1854.

The fatherless family endured more than their share of pioneer hardships. Mr. Tate was reared in Illinois, and attended Shurtleff college there. After leaving school he entered business, and soon moved to Winterset, with his brother-in-law, the late Charles Grant, to engage in the hardware and implement business here.

On December 1, 1881, he was married to Miss Helen Marion Maltby. Their entire married life was spent at their home on South Third avenue. She died on December 14, 1928. Failing health forced Mr. Tate's retirement from business in 1912.

Mr. Tate was long prominently associated with the Baptist church in Winterset. He took an active part in church work and was influential in rebuilding the present structure after the fire of 1905.

He is survived by his children: Glen D. Tate of Sioux City, Laura E. Tate of Colorado Springs, Colo., Dean C. Tate of Dearborn, Mich., John M. Tate of Iowa City; Horace Tate of Des Moines, Gertrude Tate of Des Moines, and Mrs. Mabel Myers of Norfolk, Neb.

Funeral services were held Wednesday morning from Tidrick's funeral home in charge of the Rev. J. H. Cochrane, Jr., pastor of the Baptist church. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
