Had Been Resident of Peru Community for 63 Years
Mrs. Eliza Carter, a resident of the Peru community for 63 years, died last Saturday at the hospital in Osceola, after an acute illness of four weeks. She was 65 years old and had been in ill health for about two years.
Mrs. Carter was the former Eliza Ann Miller, daughter of Loyal Wellington and Charlotte Carter Miller and was born in Shelbyville, Ill., on February 24, 1872. At the age of 2 years she came with her parents to Iowa and settled on a farm near Peru. That community was her home for the remainder of her life.
On November 14, 1885, she was married to James Emerson. They were the parents of nine children. Three of them, Beulah, Clarence and Cleo, together with the father, preceded the mother in death.
She was again married on August 2, 1921 to M. S. Carter. Mr. Carter died in 1935.
Mrs. Carter united with the Christian church in Peru at the age of 11 years. When this group disbanded, she affiliated with the Methodist church.
She is survived by three sons, Arnie Emerson of Peru and Loyal and Derry Emerson of Winterset; three daughters, Addie Kelly of Earlham and Nellie Simmons and Berdie Shearer of Peru; three brothers, Ed Miller of Locksburg, Ark., and Milo and Clarence Miller of Columbus, Ohio; six sisters, Louise, Viola, Nellie, Ettie, Nettie and Tiny, all of Ohio; and three step-daughters, Mrs. Stella Shannon, Mrs. Blanche Carlisle and Mrs. Eunice Harmon, all of Des Moines. In addition to 26 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. Lyda Carter, who died Saturday at the Harken hospital in Osceola, were held Monday afternoon from the Peru Methodist church and burial was in the Peru cemetery. Mrs. Carter’s condition became critical a few weeks ago, but her death at this time, came as a shock to her many friends.
She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Addie Kelley of Earlham, Mrs. Nellie Simmons and Mrs. Berdie Shearer of Peru, three sons, Arnie Emerson of Peru and Loyal and Derry Emerson of Winterset and three step-daughters, Mrs. Stella Shannon, Mrs. Eunice Hanson and Mrs. Blanche Carlile, all of Des Moines, and several grandchildren, brothers and sisters. Mrs. Carter was a devoted church worker and a splendid neighbor.
