FORMER MERCHANT DIES IN CALIFORNIA

J. E. Smith Conducted Grocery Business Here for Many Years

J. E. Smith, familiarly known as Ed Smith to this community, died on August 7 at San Rafael, Cal., where he had made his home in recent years. He was 86 years of age.

Mr. Smith had been engaged in the grocery business on the Winterset square for about two score years, retiring in 1926.

He was born November 20, 1854, in the Ebenezer neighborhood of Madison county, of a pioneer family there. When he was a child the family moved to Winterset. He first entered business as a partner of the late J. W. Frankelberger. Later he engaged in the grocery business by himself on the west and south sides of the square.

Mr. Smith was a leading citizen in this community for many years. He was a leading spirit in the development of the Winterset City park, and was a member of the Methodist church.

Funeral services were held at San Rafael. Interment will be made in the family plot at the Winterset cemetery at 9 a.m. Friday.

He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. J. H. Crann of Winterset, a brother, W. F. Smith of Iowa City, and a niece and nephew, Ethel and Ellzmeer Morgan of San Anselmo, Cal.
