Pioneer Iowa Resident Had Long Lived at DeSoto and Dexter
Albert Ross Hemphill, who spent most of his life in the DeSoto and Dexter communities, died Sunday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Vivian Piatt of Rockwell City. He was 87 years of age.
Mr. Hemphill was born Oct. 1, 1854, at Attica, Ind., the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Dixon Hemphill. When he was 12 years old the family move from Indiana to Des Moines in a covered wagon. Later, they moved to a farm near DeSoto.
He was married to Anna Norris on May 11, 1876. They were the parents of four daughters, who survive and a son who died in infancy.
He is survived by the four daughters, Mrs. Ethel Knox of Evanston, Ill., Mrs. Blanche Kitt of Winterset, Mrs. Estella Goss of Plankinton, S.Dak., and Mrs. Piatt. He also leaves five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
