EZRA HERMON

Ezra Hermon, a resident of Scott township, died at his home south of Winterset, Tuesday afternoon of heart attack, at the age of 82 years, 3 months and 5 days. The last surviving member of a family of nine children, Mr. Hermon was born in Ohio, December 25, 1856, the son of Peter and Elizabeth Hircock Hermon who came to this country from England, residing in Ohio a few years, where Mr. Hermon was born. Then the farmily came to Madison county where he spent the remainder of his life.

He was married to Emretta Beem in April, 1885. To them were born five children, two sons and three daughters. After only a few years of married life, his wife passed away on July 23, 1891, and to him fell the task of being both father and mother to his small children, which duty he performed lovingly and untiringly through all these years. His familiar figure will be greatly missed from the community where he lived, on the same farm for the past 47 years.

He loved his home, and its glad associations demanded the major portion of his life. For diversion he was a great reader and lover of poetry. His mind was filled with its refining and beautiful sentiments. He loved nature and birds especially found in him a friend. He knew them and they seemed to know of his friendliness towards them.

He leaves to mourn his death his children: Roy Hermon of Winterset, Mrs. Ethel Holmes of Leeds, North Dakota, Mrs. Sula Poland of Winterset, Mrs. Grace Yoder of Boulder, Colorado, and Elvert Hermon of Long Beach, California; also 19 grandchildren, besides a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. L. F. Davis at the Tidrick funeral home, April 9, at 2:00 p.m. Don Clement sang "In the Garden", and "Going Home". Mrs. H. L. Olmstead was the pianist. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
