Former County Auditor Had Been in Failing Health for Several Months
Ellyson Green, one of Winterset's most valued citizens, died suddenly at his home here Wednesday noon after a long period of failing health. He was 78 years of age.
Mr. Green was a former auditor of Madison county, from 1917 to 1920, and served several years as deputy auditor. Until his health forced his complete retirement last spring, he had been for years a clerk in the office of the county engineer.
Mr. Green had been a resident of Winterset since 1905. He was a native of West Virginia, but in infancy moved with his parents to Philadealphia, Pa. Later the family moved to Kewanee, Ill., where he was reared. At the age of 18 years he settled in Jewell county, Kan., where he farmed until 1903. He moved then to Madison county in this state, farming here a year before going to Shenandoah to enter the fire insurance business. After a year there he moved into Winterset and continued the same business.
He was married to Miss Ida Boulton, a native of Louisa county, Iowa. They have three living children, Fred of Oklahoma, Ralph of Des Moines, and Fern of Cincinnatti, O. One son, Lieut. Clarence R. Green of Company A., 168th Inf. Reg., was one of the first American officers to give his life in the World war.
Mr. Green was prominently identified with the Methodist church in Winterset, and was affiliated with the Masonic order here.
Funeral services had not been made as the Madisonian went to press Wednesday afternoon.

Former County Auditor Dies Wednesday. Funeral Held Saturday.
Ellyson Green, long time resident of Winterset and former county auditor, died Wednesday of last week at his home here in Winterset following a period of failing health. Mr. Green was county auditor of Madison county from 1917 until 1920 and also served several years as deputy auditor. He was clerk in the county engineer’s office for many years serving until last spring when he retired because of ill health.
Mr. Green was born in Petersburg, Virginia, July 5, 1860 and when a small child migrated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1878 he moved to Kansas with his parents and was married to Lida Ella Boulton, February 18, 1865. To them was born three sons and one daughter. In 1904 the family moved to Winterset and have resided here since that time. Mr. Green was affiliated with the Methodist church, was a member of the local Masonic Lodge and was an active civic leader.
The survivors are his wife; two sons, Fred Ellyson Green of Skiatook, Oklahoma, and Ralph R. Green of Des Moines; one daughter, Mrs. Philip Konkel, Cincinnati, Ohio; five grandsons and two sisters, Mrs. George Darts, Webber, Kansas, and Miss Margaret Green, Superior, Nebraska. One son, Lieut. Clarence R. Green of Company A, 168th Inf. Reg., was killed in action in France in 1918.
The funeral services were held at the Ramsey–Richards funeral home, Saturday afternoon at two-thirty, conducted by the Rev. J. R. McNichols, pastor of the Methodist church. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
