ELDERLY FARMER IS KILLED IN FALL

Hugh Shearer of Webster Township is Victim of Accident

Hugh F. Shearer, elderly farmer of the Oak Grove neighborhood in Webster township, was instantly killed Friday morning in a fall from a scaffold on which he was working at the the George Hulburt home in the same neighborhood. Mr. Shearer was 73 years of age.

The accident occurred at about 11 a.m. Mr. Shearer was working on a scaffold about 10 feet above the ground, putting new siding on the Hulburt home. In some manner, he lost his balance while sawing off a board, and fell to the ground. He struck the ground on his head, breaking his neck and dying almost instantly.

Mr. Shearer was a native of Illinois and was born Oct. 26, 1863. For the past 53 years he had made his home on a farm in the Oak Grove community. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary R. Shearer, but has no other near relatives.

Funeral services were to be held at 2 p.m. yesterday (Monday) from the Oak Grove Evangelical church in charge of the pastor, the Rev. O. K. Schlesselman. Burial was to be made in the Moon cemetery near Macksburg.

Hugh F. Shearer

Hugh F. Shearer was born in Mercer county, Illinois, October 26, 1864 and died October 8, 1937, aged 73 years, 11 months and 12 days. He was married to Rosetta Clement March 7, 1888 at Macksburg, Iowa. A son, James Wesley, was born to them, dying at the age of four.

Mr. Shearer united with the Oak Grove Evangelical church when about 30. He was always active, attending a service the night before his sudden death. For over 18 years he served as janitor of the church.

He was a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge of Macksburg for 36 years.

He leaves his wife, four half brothers. Charles Huntley, Sioux Rapids; Frank Huntley, Julesburg, Colorado; John and Leonard Huntley of Washington state; a half sister, Emma Parsons, Junction, Colorado.

Services were held Monday, October 11 at the Oak Grove church, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. O. K. Schesselman. Burial was in the Moon cemetery,
