Wednesday, January 1, 1919Death of Mrs. B. L. Thrift
Mrs. Ada Bertholf Thrift died at her home in Lincoln township Sunday Dec. 29 after a critical illness of several days. For many years Mrs. Thrift had been a great sufferer but her ailments had yielded to special treatment in the past few years. However she had been on the decline for several months and her final illness evidenced alarming symptoms on Christmas Eve and only by reason of her unusual powers of resistance was her life prolonged until Sunday.
Burial services were held in the Blue Front church on Tuesday afternoon conducted by Rev. Stewart of Indianola followed by burial in the Winterset cemetery.
Mrs. Thrift's life had necessarily been a very quiet one for years owing to her poor health, but unlike many invalids her ambition far exceeded her physical powers. Strength of will overcame bodily weakness so that her friends and relatives often strained her from duties that she was eager to perform.
Mrs. Thrift, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Bertholf of Lincoln township was a native of Madison county where her entire life was spent.
Her parents survive her as do her husband and daughter, Miss Harriett; her sister, Mrs. Fred Brownell and one brother Nelson Bertholf of Winterset. Her patience in long years of suffering and thought for those about her will be a tender memory to all who knew her.

Ada Winifred Bertholf was born in Madison County, Iowa, January 10, 1867, and passed away at her home Sunday morning Dec. 29th. Thus ending her life of pain and suffering for the past eighteen years. But through these many years this dear wife and mother, was so patient and kind, willing to comply to any suggestion that might help her condition. When able, her hands were always busy doing something for others, and her many friends will cherish her memory as one who was loved by all who knew her.
She was never known to speak an unkind word of anyone, neither was she willing to listen to anything that would lessen the estimation of a friend.
On December 21st, she was married to Byron Leonard Thrift, two children were born to this union, one babe dying at birth, and Harriot Esther.
She was converted at an early age and was a member of the Christian Union Church, living a pure, consistent, Christian life. She was one of the members to organize the Clover Club, which is now grown to a membership of near forty. She will be sadly missed in this organization at she was always a willing worker.
As Mrs. thrift passed from this life she leaves to mourn her loss a devoted husband, B. L. Thrift, and loving daughter, Harriot. A father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. James Bertholf, one brother and sister, Nelson Bertholf, Mrs. Fred Brownell, and a host of friends.
