In the death of Mrs. Tiernan, there passes from the activities of life, the last of the first generation of the Tiernans and Cunninghams, who settled in the beautiful North River valley in an early day. The Tiernan home was one where the wayfarer and the traveler from home found a genuine hospitality and a kindness that came from the heart, and was prompted by generous impulses and a genuine desire to do good.

The death of Mrs. Tiernan means the departure of a good woman, in all that term implies and those whose privilege it was to know her intimately in her own home, will best appreciate her worth and most sincerely cherish her memory.

Mrs. John Tiernan

Died at the John Tiernan home in Crawford township of May 16, 1913. The burial was at St. Patrick's, May 19. Mass and services conducted by Rev. Dugan, her pastor.

Ellen Regan Tiernan was born in County Leitrim, Ireland, August15, 1839 and came to America when she was twenty years old. She lived in Providence, Rhode Island two years and moved to Des Moines where she was later married to John Tiernan in Old St. Ambrose church, Father Brazil, its long time pastor, officiating in the ceremony.

For some time they lived on a farm near Mitchellville, but Mr. Tiernan later bought the farm on North River bottom which ever since he broke it up has been a county landmark.

In the old home on North river Mrs. Tiernan endured all the hardships and privations of pioneer life. She raised a large family of children and educated herself. She was a great reader and a keen observer Her home was one of great hospitality and her guests were always delightfully entertained. She had a delightful sense of humor, and gloom was always chased from her door. She was always devoutly religious and was a life member of St. Patricks church.

Almost fifty years residence on the one farm gave her a wide acquaintance, and the news of her death, while not unexpected brought sorrow to the hearts of all.

Her husband died several years ago. She is survived by six of her ten children, Joseph of Redvale, Colorado; Mrs. J. H. McManus, Bevington, Mrs. R. J. Morrissey, Esterville, James in Lee township; Anna and P J. at home.
