Wednesday, August 12, 1953ROY FOLEY KILLED WHEN TRACTOR UPSETS AT PERU
Was Working on Street When Fatal Accident Occurred
Roy M. Foley, aged 60, of Peru was fatally injured Tuesday evening when the tractor he was operating upset, crushing him beneath.
Foley, who was a member of the Peru town council, was driving a tractor-powered scoop, removing dirt from a Peru street, when the accident occurred. This was the same spot on the same street where the Creston cream truck went out of control last week.
In turning the tractor, Foley apparently backed it a little too far into the ditch, and the machine over-turned. He was caught under the machine and crushed, receiving injuries which resulted in his death as he was being rushed by ambulance to the hospital in Winterset.
Foley, who was employed at the Sargent quarry near Peru, had been a resident of that community for 30 years.
He is survived by his wife, the former Wilma E. Young; two sons, Waldo Foley of New Virginia and Denzil Foley, at home; and two daughters, Mrs. Thelma Thurman of Berwick and Judy Foley, at home.
Funeral services will be held this Thursday at 2 p.m. from the Richards Funeral home in Winterset, in charge of the Rev. Ray Harness, pastor of the Peru Methodist church.

Services Held Thursday for Roy Foley
This community was shocked and saddened Tuesday evening, August 11 by the death of Roy Foley, a longtime resident of Peru, who was killed in a tragic accident. He was driving a tractor and scoop, removing dirt from the main street leading west out of town when the machine came too close to the edge of the narrow road, overturning down the steep bank against the house owned by Mrs. Pearl Shetterly, where Charles Dowler lives. Foley was pinned beneath, having no chance to escape. Several men who were near by tried to get him out from under the tractor, but it was useless and they went for a chain and fastened it to a truck and pulled the tractor from him.
He never regained consciousness and died before the ambulance reached the pavement on the way to Winterset.
Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the Richards funeral home in Winterset. Rev. Ray Harness of the Peru Methodist Church was the minister. Military rites were held at the Winterset cemetery where he was buried.
Mr. Foley is survived by his wife, Wilma, two sons, Waldo, of New Virginia and Denzil, of Peru and two daughters, Mrs. Thelma Thurman of Berwick and Judy, at home, also four grandchildren.
