Earlham, Iowa
September 18, 1986

Amor E. Routh, retired assistant manager of Earlham's Farmer's Cooperative died of heart complications on September 10, 1986. He was in the Veteran's Medical Center in Des Moines at the time of his death.

Amor was born in Des Moines on November 13, 1919. His home has been in Earlham since 1946. He was a graduate of Britt, Iowa and shortly thereafter, became a member of the U.S. Army. He served his country for over five years, doing something he enjoyed very much--cooking for his fellow buddies.

On December 14, 1942, he married Velma Junkin, at Lorimor, Iowa. When they moved to Earlham, he worked for Johnson Trucking and at the United Grocery Store, in the fall of 1947, he started work at the local elevator, which he served for 28 years. In March, 1976, he suffered a disabling heart attack, there followed heart by-pass surgery, numerous small attacks and a second major one in June of 1985. His health declined from that point, until God called him home.

Amor has always served his community in many ways. Some of his activities were service to his church, American Legion, VFW, Scouting, No. 1 cook for many organizations (especially the Holiday Dinner by the Business Association), Fireman for 25 years, the last five years as chief, and was serving his second term on the town council at the time of his death. One of the accomplishments he was most proud of, was the Avenue of Flags that are now in the Earlham Cemetery. He carried the dream for several years, then decided he would see if it could be accomplished – which it was with the wonderful help of the community. His hobby was woodworking, during these past years. He has primarily made bird houses that may be found throughout the community. He was unable to do this work the past year, but spent his quiet times watching birds from the patio. Even in declining health he spent time down town, when he was able to enjoy a few minutes away from home.

Some quotes from a recent reading excusion--- “Don’t be sad, remember the joys that we have shared and remember also that to that far distant shore to which I go, you each, in your own good time will come also.” “We also learn that death is not important. What is important is that he had shared his dreams, his hopes and his faith with all those who knew him.”

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Velma; two sons, Ronald of Norwalk, Rodger of Ankeny, and a daughter, Romona Fisher of Earlham, one brother Bliss of Ames, two sisters, Roma Sedars of Clear Lake and Martha Miller of Kalona, also eight grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, September 13, 1986 at the First Presbyterian Church, Earlham, Iowa, with Reverend Gladys Priest officiating. Organ music was provided by Donna Fastle and soloist was Katie Routh. Pallbearers were Gary Seaton, Greg Seaton, Virgil Seaton, John Godby, Earl Anker and Robert Love. Honorary pallbearers were Claire Waugh, Michael Golightly, Gerald Lamers, Charles Jurgensen and Wayne Fastle. Interment was in Earlham Cemetery, Earlham, Iowa.
