Death of Mrs. Elizabeth Hymes

Mrs. Elizabeth Hymes, a resident of Madison county since early childhood, died at her home in Winterset, July 2 after years of failing health. She was 85 years of age.

Mrs. Hymes was born as Elizabeth Catherine Gratner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Gratner in Indiana on March 1, 1851. She came with her parents to Iowa as a small child, the family settling southeast of Patterson.

This county had since been her home. Here she was married to Milton Hymes, who preceded her in death a number of years ago. They were the parents of seven children, two of whom, Emma May and Ernie died in infancy. The others survive their mother. They are; Charles Hymes of Douglas township, Mrs. S. B. Quantance of Vail, L. H. Hymes of Winterset, and the twins, Lawrence Hymes of Winterset and Florence Hymes of Des Moines.

Mrs. Hymes had affiliated with the Baptist church as a young woman.

Funeral services were held Sunday from the Baptist church in Winterset in charge of the pastor, the Rev. J. H. Cochrane, Jr. Burial was made in the Union Chapel cemetery.
