More than 400 persons attended funeral services last Friday at Early Chapel Christian church for Keith F. Mapes, 19 years old, of near Earlham, who was fatally injured in a construction accident near Guthrie Center Oct. 13.
The Rev. Clarence R. Dayton of Perry and the Rev. L. Willard Reynolds of Earlham officiated at the services. Burial was made in the Dexter cemetery.
Keith Francis Mapes was born at Dexter on Sept. 14, 1940, a son of Francis and Lucile Mapes. He was a member of the Early Chapel Christian church, where he had just been elected superintendent of the church school.
He had graduated from the Earlham high school with the class of 1958. His death occurred last Wednesday, the morning following the fatal accident.
He leaves his parents; two brothers, Merlin and Doyle Mapes, and a sister, Nyla Mapes.

Keith Francis Mapes, second son of Lucile and Francis Mapes was born at Dexter, Iowa September 14, 1950. He has one older brother, Merlin, one younger brother, Doyle and one sister, Nyla. He was nineteen years and one month old when this accident befell him. He passed away in the early morning of October 14, 1959 in the Guthrie County hospital.
Keith was a member of the Early Chapel Christian Church. He had attended here all his life. He was elected the Church School Superintendent for this year and had served two Sundays.
Keith attended the Earlham school and graduated with the class of 1958.
Keith loved life and was a happy lad with a cheerful manner. He leaves his family, his friends, two maternal grandmothers, several aunts and uncles as well as many cousins.
Keith is not dead, he is just away. Just nineteen years of life filled with play, work, school and lots of living.
Now, the hopes and aspirations of Keith’s life are crushed, dashed away. However, his family and friends have wonderful memories of him. They face you wherever you turn.
Over four hundred people attended the services for Keith Mapes conducted by Gail Leeper at the Early Chapel Christian Church on Friday, October 16 at 2:00 p.m.
Several members of his high school class attended in a body.
The officiating ministers were Rev. Clarence R. Dayton of Perry and Rev. L. Willard Reynolds of Earlham.
The soloist was Mrs. Robert Maxwell accompanied by Mrs. Marion Patience.
The casket bearers were Ted Harris, Roy Harris, Gene Golightly, John Thrailkill, Richard Wheeldon and Darold Slater.
The ushers were Russell Leeper, Ivyl Slaybaugh, Wayne Robinson, Dale Smith and LeRoy Fuller.
The flowers were in charge of Mrs. Russell Leeper, Mrs. Lawrence Piatt and Mrs. Wayne Robinson.
