JEROME GRIFFITH VICTIM OF STROKE

Former County Recorder Found Unconscious in Parked Car

Jerome H. Griffith, a widely-known resident of this community for many years, died at the Winterset hospital about midnight Saturday. He was 64 years of age.

Mr. Griffith was found unconscious in his car where it was parked in the vacant lot just north of the South Standard Oil station in Winterset about midnight, after he had been the object of a search since that evening. He had not been seen since about three o'clock that afternoon and local officers spent the entire evening searching for him. He was found by Sheriff A. E. Null. Officers thought he had been unconscious for six or eight hours.

After being found, he was rushed to the Winterset hospital, where he died a short time later. It was thought that he had suffered some sort of a stroke while sitting in the car.

Mr. Griffith was widely known in Winterset and Madison county having spent his life here. He was a farmer by vocation but had served as Madison county recorder about 1900.

He was born June 29, 1872, the son of David A. and Hester Griffith. Among his near surviving relatives are his brothers, David Griffith of Des Moines and Robert Griffith of Winterset.

Funeral services were to be held today (Tuesday) at 1:30 p.m. from the Tidrick funeral home. Burial was to be made in the Winterset cemetery.
