Death of T. H. Stone

T. H. Stone, a former resident of Winterset, died from an attack of heart trouble, Monday noon, while he was delivering an address to the Rotary club at Iowa Falls. Mr. Stone, who was superintendent of the training school for boys at Eldora, had been invited to Iowa Falls to give a talk before the Rotary club. He died before he was removed from the hall.

The report of Mr. Stone’s death occasioned great surprise and regret among his many friends here. He was in Winterset several weeks ago, and was apparently enjoying good health.

Funeral services were held at Eldora, Wednesday afternoon, and the body was brought here last evening, to Tidrick’s funeral home. Additional services will be held at the funeral home this afternoon at 2 o’clock, and the members of the local Masonic lodge will assist with the services.

Mr. Stone was born in Menard county, Illinois, over sixty years ago. When a youth he came with the Stone family and settled on a farm in Webster township. When about fifteen years of age, he appeared one morning at one of the school rooms and applied for entrance. It is said that the superintendent had some doubts about the unkempt boy and his ability to do the work to which he was assigned. He passed rapidly from one grade to another, and then taught in both the rural and town schools. He was later elected county superintendent of schools, and then superintendent of the Winterset schools.

Following his removal from Winterset, he served as superintendent of the Randolph and Sidney schools for a number of years. He was also engaged in Chautauqua work.

His next employment was with the Industrial State school at Eldora, being one of the two educators of prominence there, and he was thus employed when death so suddenly called him.

Mr. Stone had hosts of friends in Madison county, and hundreds of his former pupils mourn his death. His was a busy and useful life, and his works will follow him. He never lost interest in Winterset and Madison county, and had planned to make this his home when he had to give up his school work. For this reason, his remains were brought here, and he will be buried by his son, Roscoe, in the Winterset cemetery.

He leaves his wife and two sons, Lloyd, of Pittsburgh, and Harry, of Malvern.
