Samuel Barker, Early Resident of Grand River Township Dies in Colorado
Samuel H. Barker, a member of one of Madison county's well known most honored old families, died on April 17, 1937 at his home in Aurora, a suburb of Denver, Colorado.
He is survived by a daughter Mrs. Minnie Houston, Castle Rock, Colorado and two sons, Floyd I. of Buena Vista, Colorado and Charles W. of Denver, Colorado. His wife, Sarah, having preceded him in death in 1936.
Samuel H. Barker was born in 1856 being a son of Orlando W. Barker who with his two brothers, J. C. and Ethin Barker, their father Samuel and an uncle, J. C. Barker settled in Grand River township in 1853.
J. H. (Jerry) Barker, a jeweler of Winterset, 60 and 70 years ago, was a cousin of the late Samuel H. Barker. Mr. Barker moved from Madison county to Denver, Colorado in 1918 where he has since made his home, and although in recent years he had ceased to be active in business affairs, he continued to exercise the old pioneer independence and perform the duties required to care for and protect his property interests.
Mr. Barker, always alert in mind, was physically active until a few days ago when pneumonia forced his surrender.
