MARTHA MCKEE HIATT

Martha Joan McKee, daughter of John R. and Elizabeth Ann McKee was born Sept. 7, 1857 in Glade Springs, Virginia and departed this life Sept. 28, 1937 at the age of 80 years and 21 days.

Her father having died in the Civil War from exposure, her mother at the close of the war, put what she had left in a covered wagon and with her three boys and three girls and some neighbors, came to Madison county and lived many years.

Martha, being the last surviving member. She was married to Arthur W. Hiatt, Dec. 14, 1876. To this union four children were born; Orion M. of Spokane, Washington, Clifford M. of Peru, Mrs. Maggie Brown of Des Moines and Mrs. Nora Jorgensen of Peru, all of whom are living, also three grandchildren, Elizabeth and Emory Brown and Gene Jorgensen. Among those left to mourn her loss, are her husband, children, grandchildren, one half sister, Mrs. Orlena V. Gation of Spokane, Wash., several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

She joined the Methodist church in her youth, in Old Peru, and has been a loyal and faithful member, always ready to do her part. She believed in tithing and practiced it to the end.

SERVICES ARE HELD – MRS. ARTHUR HIATT

Mrs. Arthur Hiatt, 80, died suddenly at her home in Peru Tuesday morning, September 28 while helping with the family washing. She had suffered from a heart ailment several years but had been apparently as well as usual that morning.

Mr. and Mrs. Hiatt have operated a hotel at Peru the last 30 years. She was Martha Joan McKee, daughter of John R. and Elizabeth and McKee, and was born September 7, 1857 in Glade Springs, Virginia. Her father died during the Civil war from exposure and at the close of the war, her mother came to Madison county in a covered wagon, bringing with her three sons, three daughters and some neighbors.

Mrs. Hiatt was the last surviving member of her family. She was married December 14, 1876. Four children were born to the couple, Oren M. of Spokane, Washington; Clifford M. And Mrs. Nora Jorgenson, both of Peru; Mrs. Maggie Brown of Des Moines. She leaves her husband and children, three grandchildren, a half-sister, Mrs. Orlena V. Gaston of Spokane, Washington. She became a member of the Methodist church when a young girl in old Peru.

Services were held at the Peru church Thursday afternoon by the Rev. E. L. Patterson of St. Charles, and burial was in the Peru cemetery.
