Death Occurs Few Weeks After Major Surgery at Des Moines
Martin J. Roach, well known Madison county farmer, died at the Mercy hospital in Des Moines, Saturday evening, November 29th, at the age of 74 years. He became ill a few weeks ago, and underwent major surgery at the hospital, November 10th, and his condition had been critical since that time.
Mr. Roach was a native of Madison county, a son of John and Mary Roach, he was born at the home in Lee township, October 27, 1884. His first wife was the former Margaret Cunningham, also a daughter of pioneer county residents, and they were the parents of six children. She died February 22, 1922.
They resided on a farm near Bevington, and that place has since been his home.
He was married to Mary Melvin of Pueblo, Colorado, April 10, 1945, who survives him. He also leaves his four sons and two daughters, Father Daniel Roach, of Manilla, Philippine Islands; Joe Roach of Council Bluffs, Martin Roach, Jr. of Crawford township, Kieran Roach of Round-Up, Wyoming, Mrs. Jack (Mary) Drees of Chicago, Illinois and Mrs. Jack (Eleanor) LeStrange of Crawford township. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Della Kane of Des Moines, Mrs. Mayme Hanley of Omaha, Nebraska and two brothers, John Roach of Indianola and Daniel Roach of California; seventeen grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Rosary services for Mr. Roach were held at the Caldwell-Brian funeral home in Des Moines, on both Sunday and Monday evenings, and final rites were held at St. Patrick's church in Lee township, Tuesday morning, December 2nd, at 10 a.m. with burial in the church cemetery.
