MORRIS MACUMBER, 48 DIES IN CALIFORNIA

Native of Ord Community Had Retired from Naval Service

Morris Macumber, a native of the Ord community in Madison county, died Sunday, March 15, in the U. S. naval hospital at San Diego, Calif. He was 48 years of age, and had been in failing health for six months.

Mr. Macumber was a son of Elwood and Vern Macumber of the Ord community. He attended grade school at Yale in Lincoln township, and graduated from Indianola high school.

He enlisted in the U.S. navy in 1932 and was a veteran of World War II. During the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, in 1941, he was serving aboard the U.S.S. Vestal, a repair ship. During the war he was aboard the U.S.S. California, with the Seventh fleet. He had retired from the service as chief machinist's mate.

Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Vern Macumber of Des Moines; two brothers, Robert Macumber of Lorimor and Rolland Macumber of Macon, Mo.; and a sister, Mrs. George Carlson of Des Moines. His father and a sister Mrs. Rex Schade preceded him in death.

The body will be returned to Winterset for funeral services, which will be held this Saturday at 1:30 p.m. from the Richards funeral home. Burial will be made in the Clark cemetery.
