Winterset's Oldest Citizen Had Been in Good Health Until Recently
John S. Holmes, Winterset's oldest living resident, died last Saturday, Aug. 16, at Memorial hospital here, after several months of failing health.
Mr. Holmes was 97 years of age, and had been in his usual good health until late this spring.
He was a life-long resident of Madison county, and had lived in Winterset the last 45 years.
A son of John S. and Elizabeth Beem Holmes, both of whom were pioneer residents of Madison county, he was born in Scott township on Feb. 1, 1861. He was married on Sept. 24, 1885, to Elvira Harrell. His active life was spent in farming until his retirement 45 years ago, when he moved into Winterset.
He was the last surviving member of a family of 11 children.
In Scott township, he attended the Bethel and Zion churches. After moving to Winterset he attended the Baptist church here.
His wife preceded him in death. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Ora Haines; two grandsons, Maurice and Eldon Haines; seven great grandchildren; a great, great grandson; and two nieces whom he took into his home and reared after the death of their mother. They are Mrs. Asa Armstrong and Mrs. Lota Armstrong.
Funeral services were held Monday from the Richards Funeral home, conducted by the Rev. A. R. Weed. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
