Death at Memorial Hospital Results From Heart Attack
John W. Cornell, member of a formerly prominent Winterset family, died Sunday, Nov. 16, at Memorial hospital in Winterset. He had been at the hospital several days, following a heart attack.
Mr. Cornell was 74 years of age. He was a native of Winterset, where he was born April 3, 1884, a son of Wilber J. and Nettie Wilson Cornell. He graduated from Winterset high school and attended Iowa State college in Ames and Drake university in Des Moines.
As a young man he engaged in farming for several years, living in Douglas township. After that he moved to Winterset and for a number of years engaged in livestock buying.
He entered the automobile business at the Ford garage in Winterset, and later was employed as a car salesman in Des Moines and Leon. After leaving Leon, he moved to Dows, where he held the Ford agency for many years. In recent years he had operated a grocery store in Winterset.
Mr. Cornell was married March 10, 1907 to Blanche Young of Winterset. Her death occurred Oct. 27, 1957.
He was a member of the Winterset Presbyterian church.
Surviving are a daughter, Sue, Mrs. William Sollner of Battle Creek, Mich.; three grandchildren; a brother, J. Robert Cornell of Spirit Lake; and a sister, Edith, Mrs. Tom Frost of Portland, Mich.
Funeral services were held this Tuesday from the Anderson home for funerals, conducted by the Rev. Robert A. Owens, pastor of the Winterset Christian church. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
