Was Last Survivor Among 15 Children Born to Pioneer Parents
Mrs. George Black, member of a pioneer Madison county family and a resident of Winterset for many years, died Sunday, Oct. 19, at her home here. She was 84 years of age, and had been in delicate health since last spring.
Mrs. Black was the former Maude M. Baker, daughter of Daniel and Fannie Baker who pioneered in southern Madison county in 1854. She was born May 13, 1874, the youngest of 15 children born to her parents. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She was united in marriage to George Black on New Year's day 1901. He preceded her in death in 1941.
She had been active in the Methodist church during her entire life. She also was a past chief of the Pythian Sisters lodge, of which she was a member for more than 50 years.
Nearest surviving relatives are nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday from the Winterset Methodist church, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. W. W. Steinmetz. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
