August B. Schalkle

August B. Schalkle, a resident of this community for 52 years, was born March 4, 1870, at Morris, Illinois, and died September 16, 1961, at the Methodist hospital in Des Moines. He was 91 years, 5 months and 12 days of age.

One of the seven children of Mr. and Mrs. Antone Schalkle, he spent his boyhood in Coal City, Illinois. He was married to Janet Hunter at D’amond, Illinois, November 23, 1892. A son and three daughters were born to them.

The Schalkle family came to this vicinity in 1909 and resided on farms south of town for a number of years. After moving to Earlham, Mr. Schalkle was engaged in building and contracting houses. He later operated a coal business, retiring in 1945.

In recent years he had made his home with his son, Earl Schalkle, and often spent the winter months with his daughter, Mrs. Nellie Lundahl, at Pasadena, California. For the past nine months he had been a resident of the Lutheran Home at Madrid, Iowa.

Of a jovial and optimistic nature, Mr. Schalkle enjoyed his family and friends. He was always thoughtful of the sick and unfortunate, and vitally interested in the affairs of his community and church. For several years he served as mayor of Earlham, having previously been a town council member. He was a 50-year member of the Modern Woodmen of America. He was an active member and a former trustee of the Presbyterian church at the time of his death.

Mr. Schalkle was preceded in death by his wife, who died in 1937, and three daughters: Mrs. Violet Hoadley, Mrs. Nellie Lundahl and Irene Schalkle. Survivors are his son and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Schalkle, Earlham; a granddaughter and great grandson, Margaret Sue Schalkle and Scott Warren Wallace, Marion, Iowa; and two brothers, Tony and Harry Schalkle, Hillsboro, Illinois.
