Mother of 12 Children Was Former Resident of County
Mrs. Ethel I. Stump, a resident of Madison county for many years, died Tuesday, Nov. 8, at Osceola, after a long illness. She was 61 years of age.
Mrs. Stump was the former Ethel Irene Chase, daughter of Charles and Ida Chase. She was born at Given on Nov. 23, 1898. On Aug. 11, 1915, she was married to James A. Stump. They were parents of 12 children.
One of her sons, Gerold Stump of St. Charles, was killed in action while serving with the U. S. armed forces in World War II. A daughter, Helen Jean, and two infant sons also preceded her in death.
She is survived by her husband; three daughters, Mrs. Opal Sinclair and Mrs. Odean McKnight of New Virginia and Mrs. Darlene Walker of St. Charles; five sons, Charles, James and Earnest Stump, all of Des Moines, Neal Stump of Osceola and Ivan Stump of St. Charles; 22 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. She also leaves a half brother, Fred Baker of Rochester, Minn.
Funeral services were held from the St. Charles Church of Christ last Thursday, in charge of the Rev. Joe M. King and the Rev. James Farrell. Burial was made in the St. Charles cemetery.
