COLORADO SERVICES FOR R. S. HERRICK

Word has been received here of the death of Robert S. Herrick, former Des Moines and Madison county resident, who was well known in horticulture circles, Saturday, August 27th in Littleton, Colorado, at the age of 78 years. Mr. Herrick had resided in the family home there since 1956, when he sold his Madison county orchard, near Bevington, and returned to reside with his only surviving sister, Mrs. Helen Dale. He had suffered a severe stroke, four weeks prior to his death.

A native of Littleton, he attended school there, a business college in Denver and then he received his degree in horticulture at Colorado agricultural college at Ft. Collins in 1908. He came to Ames in 1912 when he was appointed extension horticulturist for Iowa state college. From 1920 to 1946 he served as executive secretary and treasurer of the Iowa state Horticultural society with headquarters in Des Moines.

In 1920 he purchased the farm northwest of Bevington, which was known as the Herrick orchard, and he and his wife moved there, following his retirement in 1946. Mrs. Herrick died in 1952, but he continued to reside there, until he sold the orchard to Richard E. Conant in 1956 and returned to Littleton.

Mr. Herrick was a member of the Masonic lodge, and belonged to the First Presbyterian church in Winterset while residing in this community.

Funeral services for him were held in the Chapel of Peace, Wednesday, August 28th and Masonic burial rites were held at the Littleton cemetery.
