OBITUARY

James Frank Junkin, a resident of this community for almost 80 years and the last surviving member of the family of James Law and Rebecca Lowther Junkin, was born April 6, 1868, near Monmouth in Warren County, Illinois. When a young boy he went with his family to a homestead site near Mitchell, S. Dak. In October, 1880, they came by covered wagon to Penn township and located south of Earlham.

He was united in marriage with Etta Stewart on December 25, 1890. One son, Mac W. Junkin, was born to them. Mrs. Junkin died March 27, 1892.

On February 26, 1896, he was married to Jennie Fleming. For two years they lived in the historic "grout" house north of the Penn Center church before moving to the farm now occupied by his grandson, Frank Junkin. Mr. Junkin was associated with his brother, J. H. Junkin, in farming until 1912 when he moved with his wife to Earlham. At their home here they were privileged to celebrate their 57th wedding anniversary before Mrs. Junkin's death in 1954.

His home, his family, his church had always been his chief interests. For almost 75 years he had been a faithful member of the Earlham Presbyterian church. Always deeply interested in its activities, he had served as an elder for many years. A man of tolerance and integrity, his judgment and opinions were repected by all who knew him.

Although he had been in failing health for the past year and spent much of his time with his son and daughter-in-law, he continued to maintain his own home until the time of his death. He died at the Dexter hospital July 25, 1960, at the age of 92 years, 3 months, and 9 days.

Survivors besides his son and daughter-in-law include a niece, Mrs. Andrew Patience of Dexter who was reared in the Junkin home; four grandchildren: Mrs. Wayne Binns and Janice Junkin, Plantation Isles, Florida; Mrs. Robert Bobst, Panora; Frank Junkin, Earlham; eight great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
